Magellan’s RouteComplete routing technology could help the city of Pittsburgh reduce salt spreading by 33 percent while still maintaining the same level of road de-icing

San Dimas, CA, April 30, 2019 – Magellan®, the industry leader for innovative GPS navigation since 1986, announced today it will partner with Quetica to provide route planning, route management and GPS navigation technology to the City of Pittsburgh. The City of Pittsburgh will use the new routing technology to improve the effectiveness of it’s current snow removal and de-icing fleet.

After public complaints over road conditions last winter, the City of Pittsburgh sought industry proposals for a better snow removal and deicing solution. Quetica’s winning proposal included Magellan as its route planning and GPS navigation solution.

The solution aims to help the city reduce salt spreading by 33 percent and maintain the same level of road de-icing, according to estimates shared by the Department of Innovation and Performance. Pittsburgh spends about $2.2 million a year on road salt, the department said.
